Tell us about yourself. (Name, grade, school, Italian heritage, a few things you do)
My name is Mia Scollo and I am a senior at Bloomfield High School. I am incredibly proud to be a UNICO intern because I am able to work with so many wonderful people, and love being part of such a supportive and friendly community. I am a violist in Bloomfield High School’s Select String Ensemble, a founding member of the Quantum Strings Quartet, and a member of the Varsity Tennis team. I also help teach during rehearsals at the Bloomfield Middle School Junior Select String ensemble.
How long have you been an intern and what have you done with UNICO so far?
I have been an intern since the beginning of my junior year, and I have worked with my fellow interns on several projects for the chapter, particularly the re-creation of the website for the Bloomfield Chapter and the Christopher Columbus pancake breakfast earlier last year.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship?
I first heard about the internship from my Italian teacher who recommended that I apply. I did so, and was very excited to find out that I had obtained the position. I am very happy to be doing community service with such a welcoming group of people.
What are your plans after graduation?
I am not yet sure of what I will be studying after graduation, but some fields I am considering are English, speech pathology, and music education. I would love to study at Boston College, and no matter what I study, it is important to me that I continue to play my instrument in some capacity.
How has being an intern at UNICO put your goals in reach?
Being part of UNICO has taught me so much. By being an intern, I have learned how to communicate ideas clearly to a group and understand how an organization such as UNICO works. Taking the commitment to assist with organizational tasks and the creative aspects of the position have taught me how to succeed in a professional way, which is something I will definitely appreciate moving forward through my studies and career.
How will you continue to stay active within UNICO and the Bloomfield community?
I definitely plan on staying active within Bloomfield UNICO by becoming a youth member. I want to continue to do all that I can to stay a part of the community and maybe even help out new interns once the time comes.
