Intern Spotlight: Giovia Deputato

Intern Spotlight: Giovia Deputato

Tell us about yourself (name, education, work experience, hobbies, etc.)

My name is Giovia Deputato and I am a junior at Bloomfield High School. My Italian heritage is very important to me and one way I am able to express that is being a part of my school’s Italian Club. In the Italian Club, we do donations, food drives, bake sales, and really anything we can to contribute to the community. Besides being in the Italian Club, I am active in any events the Class of 2025 holds such as tricky trays or Battle of the Classes. Outside of school, I am a catcher for softball which is something I enjoy very much. As for my family, we are from Calabria and Foggia.

How long have you been an intern and what have you done with UNICO so far?

This is my first year with UNICO so I have only been here a few months. I was able to attend a Christmas dinner party where I met the other interns and members as well as contribute to a toy drive.

Why did you decide to apply for an internship?

I was able to hear about UNICO through my Italian teacher and she was also the one who introduced me to the internship program. When I heard that Italian heritage was also such a big factor of the organization, I was inspired to join.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan to apply to schools that have good criminology programs because that is the field I want to go into. Whether I want to be just a criminologist or criminal profiler is still undecided. My top college right now is John Jay College.

How has being an intern at UNICO put your goals in reach?

Being an intern at UNICO will allow me to have new opportunities academically as well as socially. I will be able to give back to the community more and do more community service and through UNICO, I can apply for my scholarships that will help me go to the college I want.

How will you continue to stay active within UNICO and the Bloomfield community?

Whenever I am given the chance to help the community, I will take it, even if it is through sources other than UNICO. I will do my best to keep up with what is expected of me as an intern. Even after I have graduated, I plan to come back to Bloomfield whenever I can and to contribute as much as I can!
