Tell us about yourself (name, education, work experience, hobbies, etc.)
My name is Emily Haraka and I am a Junior at Bloomfield High School. My grandparents, Frank and Judy LoMonte are both members of UNICO, as well as my sister, Anna, who is a youth member. I am the Girls Varsity Soccer Captain and a member of the Track and field team at BHS. I am also the Class of 2023 Treasurer. When I am not at school or playing sports, I love to spend my time volunteering. The BHS Girls and Boys Soccer teams participate in a program called HI-5, where we play soccer with children with special needs. I am also the President of the Red Cross Club, where we arrange many food, toy, and clothing drives, as well as make cards for veterans and organize an annual blood drive.
How long have you been an intern and what have you done with UNICO so far?
This is my first year as a UNICO Intern. So far, I have assisted the Christopher Columbus Pancake Breakfast, as well as attended the Christmas “Get Together”. My fellow interns, Tina, and I have also had meetings to discuss future projects that I am super excited about!
Why did you decide to apply for an internship?
I first heard about Bloomfield UNICO through my grandparents, but became even more familiar with the organization when my sister became the first ever UNICO Intern. I was able to see all of the community service projects they participated in and I was interested in joining in on the fun too.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation I plan to go to college, but I’m still undecided about what I would like to study. During my college years, I want to join clubs, participate in community service, and maybe even play soccer or run track.
How has being an intern at UNICO put your goals in reach?
Being a UNICO Intern has put my goals in reach because it has taught me many skills that I can take with me into college and my future career. During my time working with UNICO, I have seen what it is like to work in a professional setting, as well as learn ways to help others. Tina has also been a wonderful mentor and is full of insight that has been and will continue to be very helpful to me.
How will you continue to stay active within UNICO and the Bloomfield community?
I will continue to stay active within UNICO by becoming a Youth Member when I am eligible. It is very important for me to continue to give back to the community and stay in touch with my Italian heritage!
