Tell us about yourself (name, education, work experience, hobbies, etc.)
My name is Ava Scollo and I am currently a junior at Bloomfield High School. Outside of school, I’ll often take pottery classes, check books out of the library, go on a long run, or teach soccer to the little ones on my block. My dad’s father grew up in Sicily, Italy and immigrated here at only 17 years old. On the nights he looked after my sister and I, he told us stories of the village he grew up in with his brothers, alongside the importance of our Italian heritage.
How long have you been an intern and what have you done with UNICO so far?
Several months ago, I honorarily became a part of UNICO. The first time I participated in something for UNICO, I attended their lovely Christmas dinner.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship?
I decided to apply for the UNICO internship because I longed to be a part of something bigger, to help my community, and hopefully learn a little about my heritage.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to study either psychology or a form of nursing at a college in New England.
How will you continue to stay active within UNICO and the Bloomfield community?
I plan on continuing my work with UNICO by participating in events that happen throughout the year. I also plan on volunteering my time at the public library at the beginning of my spring break, further helping my community.
