Hi, my name is Alex Polidoro, and I’m a junior at Bloomfield High School. I’m involved in my school’s leadership class, mentoring freshmen twice a month to help them navigate high school successfully. I’m also a member of Key Club, a volunteer organization dedicated to community service. Outside of academics, I play basketball, soccer, baseball, and run cross-country. I have a strong interest in public service and am currently enrolled in the Bloomfield Police Cadet Program, where I participate in physical training and learn about law enforcement. Additionally, I’m part of Verona’s Youth EMT Program, assisting EMTs on 911 calls and gaining hands-on experience in emergency medical services. In my free time, I enjoy hanging out with friends and spending quality time with my family.
My great-great-great-grandmother, Giovanna, immigrated to America from Sicily between 1890 and 1900, settling in Bloomfield with her husband, siblings, and parents. Since then, most of her descendants have been born in Bloomfield and continue to live, attend school, or work in or around the area, keeping our family’s deep-rooted connection to the community alive.
How long have you been an intern and what have you done with UNICO so far?
I have been an intern for the past four months, during which I have actively contributed to the Bowl-A-Thon event, attended a general meeting, and am going to help with the upcoming Food Drive.
Why did you decide to apply for an internship?
I decided to apply for an internship with UNICO because of my love for volunteering and giving back to my community. I have always found happiness in contributing to local events, and I admire the positive impact that UNICO has on the people it serves. Additionally, my grandmother is a member of UNICO, and my brother was honored with a scholarship two years ago. This personal connection further inspires me to be a part of this incredible organization.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to enroll in a college that offers the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program. This will provide me with the necessary leadership training and military education while I earn my degree. Upon completing my four-year college program, I will attend Officer Candidate School (OCS) to further develop the skills required to become a Marine Corps officer. Serving as a Marine has been my lifelong passion, and I am committed to achieving this goal through dedication, discipline, and perseverance.
How has being an intern at UNICO put your goals in reach?
Interning at UNICO brings me closer to my goals by teaching me how to engage with the community and collaborate with people from different backgrounds. This experience is invaluable, as the Marine Corps requires strong teamwork and adaptability when working alongside individuals I have never met before. Learning to build trust, communicate effectively, and work toward a common mission now will prepare me for the challenges of leading in the Marines.
How will you continue to stay active within UNICO and the Bloomfield community?
I will stay actively engaged with UNICO and the Bloomfield community by participating in events and offering my support wherever it’s needed. My goal is to contribute meaningfully and make a lasting impact through service and involvement.
